About Course

Is a toaster smart? Is a talking speaker? This lesson takes grades K–3 on a playful hunt for what makes something “smart”. Through storytelling and the “AI or Not?” guessing game, children learn to spot tools that can listen, learn and help – just like a brain.

This session builds early understanding of AI by encouraging curiosity, critical thinking and everyday observation. It works well as a follow-up conversation at home: which things in our house are smart, and how do we know?

What your child will do
• Follow a story about smart machines and how they help
• Play the “AI or Not?” sorting game with pictures of a traffic light, toy robot, toaster, smart speaker and teddy bear
• Choose one picture and explain why it is – or isn’t – smart
• Take a quick quiz to check what they noticed

By the end, your child can
• What makes a machine smart rather than just electric
• How AI helps machines talk, answer questions or clean up
• To ask “how does it know that?” about the technology around them

Learning focus (Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning): Application · Learning How to Learn.

Videos, an interactive game and a quiz, designed for early readers with an adult alongside. Part of Grades K–3: Adventures in AI Land, Module 1 – Meet the Friendly Robot – What is AI?, Week 2. Next lesson: AI Around Us – At Home & School.
