About Course

Zoom out from personal routines to society. Where is AI helping – medicine, farming, accessibility – and where does it create problems: bias, privacy, jobs? Students weigh the evidence and take a position.

By grades 6–8 students can hold two ideas at once: AI is genuinely helpful and genuinely risky. This lesson gives them the evidence and the vocabulary to argue both sides before choosing their own position.

What students do
• AI’s Big World: a news story or clip about AI in healthcare, climate monitoring or transport
• A Closer Look – Benefits & Challenges: job changes, privacy, fairness, and the genuinely helpful uses
• What Do YOU Think? – a written reflection on AI’s role in your community and the world
• Sharing Your Expertise: research one societal use of AI and identify one benefit and one challenge

By the end, students can
• Weigh benefits against risks with evidence
• Form and defend an opinion
• Communicate findings to others

Learning focus (Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning): Integration · Caring.

Discussion-based lesson; suits classrooms and study groups. Part of Grades 6–8: AI Agents in Action, Module 1 – AI Agents in Action – What is AI and Why Should I Care?, Week 3. Next lesson: Humans + AI – Understanding the Relationship.
