9-12:11:Building a Robot Dog

Assistive robotics through the lens of a robot dog. Students learn what makes technology assistive, take a deep dive into SLAM and navigation, and connect it all to ambient intelligence and smart cities.

Assistive robotics is one of the most hopeful applications of AI. Through the robot dog, students see how mapping, navigation and sensing come together to help people, and how the same ideas scale up to smart cities.

What students do
• Robot Dog Blueprint: identify the “brain”, “muscles” and “senses” and what each part does
• Virtual build and troubleshooting: watch the assembly, see how sensors feed data to the decision logic, and how build problems get solved
• What is Assistive Robotics? What Makes Technology “Assistive”? – and a Deep Dive into SLAM & Navigation
• What is Ambient Intelligence?, Smart Cities Around the World, and two multiple-choice checks; assignment: a 2–3 minute talk on one component (motors, sensors, power)

By the end, students can
• SLAM and navigation concepts
• Principles of assistive design
• Smart-city examples from around the world
